This is the new 2017 SARL HF Beacon Page
Thank you to all the SA Amateurs who provided input to the list below. This is just a starting point to send out beacon information and we will be improving the list and the presentation as we go along. There are some explanatory notes at the bottom of this page. Please send updates / comments / corrections / additions to Leon Uys ZR6LU on leonuys@gmail.com or WhatsApp / SMS.

Beacons in the IARU Region 1
The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 Homepage at https://www.iaru-r1.org/index.php/beacons/beacons is still the best official reference. The IARU Region 1 is the federation of national associations of radio amateurs from Europe, Africa, Middle East and Northern Asia.
Locally in South Africa this is the first comprehensive list of HF beacons in SA regardless of mode or power. You should appear in this list whether you do WSPR, ALE, CW, FSK, JT65, QRP … from nanowatts to gigawatts, scheduled or experimental. General HF information is still handled by the SARL HF Manager at hfmanager@sarl.org.za and this list relates to HF beacons only.
VHF/UHF beacons and repeater lists are still maintained by Ronald Verweerdt ZS6RVC on the SARL website
A more automated and useful list of all beacons and repeaters is highly desirable and definitely on the To-Do list for the future and you might want to comment on what you think about it.

Martin Harrison G3USF, HF Beacon Coordinator for Region 1 of the International Amateur Radio Union maintains an excellent list of beacons at http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/por/28.htm and we are now in touch with him. Email: hf.beacons@rsgb.org.uk
John F. Wilson G3UUT, RSGB/IARU Region 1 VHF Beacon Coordinator is maintaining the IARU Region 1 VHF, UHF and Microwave beacon list at (http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/vhfc/iaru.r1.beacons) Email: jfwilson@iee.org
More Beacon Information
There are lots of interesting sites around the internet that deals with beacons in all its forms, but in South Africa you can join the Beaconeers’ WhatsApp Group and stay informed of the QRP HF beacons. There are other WhatsApp groups as well and we will add them to the list as we discover them.
You can also get a lot of information from the Groups.IO or Yahoo Groups website when you join a particular group.
Explanation of Headings
The list differentiates between Unmanned and MEPT beacons. This is somewhat arbitrary but useful.
· Unmanned means it has a separate ICASA license and callsign, and runs usually runs unattended but is assigned to or associated with a club or group, with a responsible contact person.
o If Unmanned the ICASA Licensed callsign is listed plus the amateur callsign of the contact person
o Unmanned is usually available 24 x 7 and is often published / reported in publicly referenced lists
o The published frequencies or modes don’t change regularly
o Unmanned is more oriented towards providing an ongoing service
· MEPT means Manned Experimental Propagation Transmitter, and is under the direct control (and uses the callsign) of the ICASA amateur license holder.
o If MEPT, only the amateur callsign is listed
o MEPT only transmits when the experiment is in progress and it may be intermittent
o MEPT is not bound to a particular frequency, mode or power
o MEPT is more research oriented
· None means the information is still being collected and/or confirmed.
o This information is temporary and will either be deleted or confirmed in due course
This is an early draft of the list and many errors may be included - we will fix that immediately when notified.
