GALA DINNER AND SARL AWARDS

SARL AGM
The SARL AGM was held yesterday at the Vaal University of Technology and was attended by 60 members present. There were 284 proxies. The annual report and the financial report were approved as published. Rassie Erasmus, ZS1YT, explained the budget as well as the the budgeted expenditure for the 2011 IARU conference. John Willescroft, ZS6EF, discussed the planned courses and the planned income. The budget was approved unanimously.
The AGM then proceeded to discuss the motions. The validity of the motion 1 was questioned. The Chairman explained that the motion was received before the closing date and was signed by the proposer and seconder. Richard, ZS6UK, proposed an amendment. The amendment was voted on and carried with 254 in favour and 13 against. The amendment amounts to that councillors will serve for two years and that 50% retire annually.
Motion 2, that the Forum is only open to members ,was carried unanimously. An amendment was proposed to have two forums one for members and one for non-members. The amendment was defeated by 254 against and 4 votes in favour.
The meeting adjourned to attend a presentation about physics by Tony Voorveld, ZS6CCD. The meeting resumed at 12:45. Under general various members asked questions around the regulations and the HAREC certificate.
The meeting closed at 13:40.
A brief Council meeting was held. Dennis Green, ZS4BS, was re-elected as President and Mark Zank, ZS6YES, as Vice President. Other portfolios will be discussed at the first council meeting. The following councillors were declared elected as only 15 nominations were received and one nomination was withdrawn, The other council members for the 2011/2012 are as follows:

GALA DINNER AND SARL AWARDS
We noted that the names of a Past President of the SARL, Chris Turner, then ZS6GM, and Gerald Klatzko, ZS6BTD, who I think is the oldest Honorary Life Member of the SARL, appeared on somewhere in the AGM papers. We presume that they would have had something to say during the course of the gala dinner on Saturday evening. Best of luck to them.
The gala dinner was interrupted by the presentation of SARL Awards, which was done by ZS6P, Tjerk Lammers, the awards manager of the SARL.
It is to be noted that Honorary Life Membership and Jack Twine Merit Awards are awarded once only to a particular person and are in recognition of meritious work done for the SARL over a period of membership. All the other awards are for achievements by individuals during the the past financial year. The awards are:

PROPAGATION REPORT
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is at moderate levels. Numerous C-Class flares are taking place around both sprawling Sunspot 1 190 and new Sunspot 1 193. The solar flux is trending higher thanks to all of the recent sunspot activity. The official Sunspot number count of 153 on Wednesday was a new record for Cycle 24. The effective sunspot number is expected to be around 75 for the coming week.
15 m will provide the best opportunities for DX followed by 20 m. With the higher sunspot activity 10 m will open first followed by the lower bands later during the day. Conditions to India will be good from the afternoon till after sunset. During the late afternoons conditions will be good towards Europe. Fair contacts with the USA are possible during the evenings. Contacts with Australia are possible on 15 m at sunrise and 20 m after sunset. Openings to Brazil and South America are possible during the afternoons. With the good 15 and 20 m openings 17 m and 12 m will also be full of surprises.
For the CW and digital enthusiasts 30 m may be very rewarding with openings to many parts of the world.
Locally is 40 m the work horse for contacts around the country with 20- and 30 m also being very useful for contacts over the longer distances. 80 m will be best during the early mornings and late afternoons as well as over the shorter distances.
80 m is the frequency of choice during the evenings.
