SILENT KEYS
It is with regret that it must be announced that the keys of two radio amateurs became silent recently. They are:
Reg Sweet, ZS5CO, about a month ago.
Freddie Calitz, ZS6JC, on 20 July after a period of ill-health. He was a long standing member of the Pretoria Amateur Radio Club.
Our sincere condolences go out to the relatives and friends of the deceased.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO DURBAN NEXT SATURDAY
Do not miss the SARL's Radio Technology in Action on Saturday 30 July. It will be held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. Registration is from 08:15. The full programme is available on www.sarl.org.za, select RTA in the left hand column. The cost is R60 including refreshments and a light lunch as well as participation in the draw for attendance prizes. Students and learners under 25 attend free.
Bring a friend along and introduce him or her to the world of Amateur Radio.
BOB HEIL TO BROADCAST HAM NATION ON JULY 26 FROM THE QE2 RADIO ROOM
On Tuesday 26 July be certain to tune into Bob Heil, K9EID, show Ham Nation for its first live out of studio remote broadcast. Bob along with co-host Gordon West, WB6NOA, plan to originate from the historic radio room on board the famed Queen Mary ocean liner. This is a major Southern California attraction moored in Long Beach Harbour.
Their special guest will be Nate Brightman, K6OSC. Brightman is the person generally credited with first bringing the radio room to life as an operational amateur radio station with the call sign W6RO several decades ago. Ham Nation airs live on Leo LaPorte's Twit internet television network every Tuesday at 21:00 Eastern time. To tune in simply take your web browser to www dot twit dot tv and click in the tab marked "live." You can also see a replay of the show about 24 hours later by downloading the podcast at www dot twit dot tv.
PRESIDENT'S NET TO DISCUSS IARU MOTIONS THIS EVENING
The President and SARL delegates to the triennial IARU Region 1 conference invite your input to how the SARL should respond to the various motions to be discussed at the conference to be at Sun City from 12 to 19 August.
The President's net will be on the air this evening, Sunday 24 July from 19:30 on various repeaters and on Echolink. Martin du Preez, ZS6ZY, will also relay the net on 3 718 kHz.
Clubs wishing to join the network should send the telephone number to be linked to artoday@sarl.org.za before mid day today. Only Telkom landlines can be connected.

COMPETITION NEWS
DO NOT MISS THE BARK 40 METRE SUNDAY WINTER WARMER THIS ADTERNOON
The Boland Amateur Radio Club will be holding its 40 metre sprint contest today, Sunday 24 July from 15:00 - 18:00 CAT. This is a fun activity to promote contacts on 40 metres between radio amateurs in Southern African countries. It is also an ideal opportunity for Mobile stations, Field stations and RaDAR stations to participate. For more information go to page 60 of the SARL "Blue book" available on the SARL web.

PROPAGATION REPORT
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. Currently there remain three spotted regions on the face of the visible solar disk. Sunspots 1 251, 1 254 and 1 259 remain fairly quiet. There is a chance for C-Class flares.
For the people doing their own frequency predictions the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be less than 40.
With the winter here 20 m will provide the best opportunities for DX followed by 30 m. There is a chance of 15 m openings to South America.
