** The SARL has requested ICASA to change the beacon frequency of 5250 to 5290 kHz to line up with the same allocation in Europe and other countries. This will greatly enhance the coverage of beacons. ICASA has agreed and this week change the 5250 kHz frequency for 5290 kHz. To received WSPR beacons set your radio to SSB and tune 1, 5 kHz lower to 5288,5 kHz. To learn more about the WSPR software, down a tutorial by Stewart Moss, ZS6SGM from the SARL web. Click on Propagation Research on the left hand side of the home page and follow the link. WSPR stations operating on 5250 kHz are requested to move frequency on 4 October to 5290 kHz

The three SARL delegates, Geoff Levey ZS6C, Riaan Greeff, ZS4PR and Rassie Erasmus, ZS1YT left for Bulgaria on Thursday to attend the International Amateur Radio Union Conference which started today. Reports will be posted on the home page of the SARL web on a daily basis. The three will represent the SARL and South African Radio Amateurs. ** On Sunday night 14 September 2014 Dave ZS5DJ heard the FR5DN beacon from Reunion Island on 144,418 MHz JT65b at 19:50 CAT with signal strength -13 dB. He gave a call to FR5DN and Phil came back immediately and completed a digital QSO within 30 minutes. John ZS2AH reported that he heard the piccolo tones from FR5DN on SSB twice that evening on 144,418 MHz at about 20:45 CAT and again at 21:15 CAT. The Hepburn Forecasts indicated good Tropo Ducting across this sea path.

Glenn ZS2GK made the first-ever contact with Phil FR5DN on 15 August 2008 on SSB and FM, and a year later also on JT65b. On 9 and 13 February 2010 a spate of digital contacts were made with FR5DN by Andre ZS2ACP (3247 km), Peter ZS2ABF (3005 km), Glenn ZS2GK (2875 km), Dave ZS5DJ (2713 km), Derek ZS5Y (2655 km).
