Good morning and welcome. The bulletins may be heard via the many VHF and UHF relays as well as on HF on 7066 kHz from Pretoria. Echolink listeners may tune in to the relay by ZS0JPL.

SILENT KEY

It is with regret that we have to announce that Herman Smit ZS6EMI was tragically killed in a motorbike accident on Tuesday 28 April around 7:00 am. He was on his way back to Pretoria from a motorbike rally in Margate. He crashed into a stationery vehicle on the South Coast Highway and was killed instantly. Ria, his new wife from New Zealand, was seriously injured and still in a coma, is in hospital in Durban. At the time of compilation she was still unaware of his passing.

Herman is to be cremated in Port Shepstone and his ashes sent to Pretoria. Once Ria has recuperated, a memorial service will be held.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

NEW VHF BEACON PLANNED FOR WESTERN CAPE

** Trevor Brinch, ZS1TR, has indicated that he is prepared to run a 2 metre beacon from his QTH at L'Agulhas within the next few months. The beacon will be supplied from Port Elizabeth by Ken Victor, ZS2OC, who is the custodian of the old beacon used by the former P.E. Branch of the SARL. The beacon will be programmed with the call sign ZS1TR and the locator JF95we. It will be equipped with horizontal dipole antenna beaming east/west and covering the southern coast, which will include Dana Bay, Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth and maybe as far as East London. Tropo-ducting frequently occurs along the coast whenever a cold front is approaching the Cape.


** It is once again time for the annual Kempton Park Amateur Radio Technical Society (KARTS) and the Antique Wireless Associations (AWA) combined flea market and open day event that will take place on Saturday 06 June 2015 from 10H00 onwards.
The venue is at the Impala Voortrekkers Centre, Rooibos Avenue, Allen Grove, Kempton Park.

** Antique Wireless Association of Southern Africa.
The AWA Valve QSO Party will be held over the weekend of 9th and 10th May 2015.
On Saturday 9th May at 15:00-19:00 SAST will be the AM session and on Sunday 10th, 15:00 to19:00 SAST will be the SSB session, on both the 40-metre and 80-metre bands.
Exchange is call sign, RS and consecutive serial numbers as well as the type of radio used.
Station logs should carry all the details of the station including the type of radio used for multiplier.

** Twenty two certificates for the PEARS VHF & UHF Contest have been e-mailed to the winners and runners-up of the various categories of the contest. Please check the results in the "PEARS VHF/UHF Contest" on the SARL VHF Forum, and if you have not yet received your certificate then contact ZS2FM mikecbosch@gmail.com confirming your e-mail address.


** This afternoon from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC, you can work all the radio amateurs in the Northern Cape during the ZS3 Sprint. It is a phone and CW contest on the 40-metre band and the exchange is a RS or RST report and provincial or country abbreviation.

Scoring for non-ZS3 stations - contacts with stations in ZS3 are worth 2 points and contacts with stations in own or other ZS call areas (excluding ZS3) or Southern African countries are worth 1 point. Scoring for ZS3 stations - contacts with stations in ZS3 are worth 1 point and contacts with stations in other ZS call areas or Southern African countries are worth 2 points.

Contacts with the Northern Cape Amateur Radio Club, ZS3NC, Namaqualand Aero Sport Association, ZS3FLY, the Kalahari Karoo Amateur Radio Club, ZS3ARK, or the Sutherland Amateur Radio Club, ZS3OBS, are worth 5 points each. Only one contact per station is allowed. Log sheets must reach zs3nc@qsl.net by 10th May. A certificate will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the expected solar activity will be at low levels. No flaring activity is expected with only two visible active regions with simple magnetic configurations.

If you want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be around 39.

The 20 to 10 metre bands will provide lots of DX fun, especially during the late afternoons and in the evenings.
